The Social Services Hut brought to the village in 1921 by the council was also known as the ‘Green Hut’. It had multiple uses – mothers remember bringing their babies to the hut for the baby clinic.
It was also used as a social space for celebrations, parties, dances, meetings and where Jim Bradley played with his band, whilst still at school – young people only enjoying soft drinks as it was not a licensed premises.
Jim played the drums with school friends as they performed hits by the Beatles and Rolling Stones etc.
They would organise the whole event themselves and Jim would make the advertising posters, charging 1 shilling or 1s and 6d to get in.
Wedding receptions were held in the hut as well as Beetle Drives. Heslop’s wood working hut was beside the Social Services Hut.
